What is Storage?

Definition: Storage is the process of organizing goods upon their arrival in a warehouse so that they can be efficiently stored and easily retrieved when needed. The stock is updated in the warehouse management system (e.g., a Warehouse Management System – WMS).

What is the process of storage?

1. Goods Receipt: The goods are delivered to the warehouse and received. A check is usually performed for completeness and the condition of the delivery.
2. Inspection and Registration: The received goods are checked for quality, quantity, and compliance with order data. They are also recorded in the system to document the current stock.
3. Assignment of Storage Locations: The warehouse management system assigns suitable storage locations to the goods based on various criteria (such as size, weight, turnover frequency). This is done according to different storage strategies, such as chaotic storage or fixed location allocation.
4. Transport to Storage Location: The goods are transported from the goods receipt area to the assigned storage locations. This can be done manually by warehouse workers or automatically by Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs).
5. Storage: The goods are placed at the designated location in shelves, bins, or on pallets. The position is stored in the system to ensure easy retrieval later.
6. Stock Update: After the goods are stored, the stock in the warehouse management system is updated. This ensures that the stock is always accurate and up to date.
