Task and Resource Management

SAP TRM material flow control is an integrated module of SAP R/3 Enterprise or of the SAP product suite SAP ERP.
The main application area of SAP TRM is material flow control for automated warehouse systems (miniload AS/RS, HBW) as well as forklift guiding in manual warehouse areas.

The use of SAP TRM produces a two-level system architecture SAP–PLC with maximum SAP integration and simple interfaces. External middleware and subsystems (MFS, MFC) are dispensed with entirely.

Lower operating costs, high flexibility and transparency, plus maximum protection for the investment

SAP TRM material flow control

With real-time-capable SAP Task & Resource Management (SAP TRM), automated high bay warehouses of all kinds, as well as the conveyor systems connected to them, are controlled and optimised - additional IT subsystems (MFC, among others) are not needed.

SAP TRM transfers the movement commands in real time directly to the PLC of the stacker cranes or of the connected conveyor system.

Storage and retrieval strategies, optimisations (e.g. arrangement of articles within the warehouse, path-optimised finding of storing positions, double-depth storage, multiple-depth warehouses, curved aisles, etc.) are represented fully in SAP TRM.

Automated small parts warehouses (for containers and trays) as well as vertical lift systems and pick-by-light facilities are controlled directly with SAP TRM.

Miniload AS/RS systems are frequently implemented with double-depth storage and multiple-load-handling devices. The sophisticated IT optimisation strategies required for this are comprehensively represented in SAP TRM.

As a result of the real-time capabilities of the SAP TRM system architecture, fast response time and optimal system efficiency is assured.

SAP TRM warehouse control

Specific storage strategies are represented in SAP TRM for multiple-depth storage warehouses, e.g. for minimising re-storage probability.

For retrieval purposes, handling units near to the aisle are reserved and the retrieval strategy takes into account the formation of pairs wherever possible.

Numerous successful projects with double- and multiple-depth storage for HBW and miniload AS/RS facilities have already been realised successfully with SAP TRM – naturally in the SAP standard.

Conveyor paths for pallets, totes, etc on the automated conveyor lines are defined flexibly as so-called routes in SAP TRM.

Sophisticated conveyor system layouts, e.g. over several levels, using buffers, sorting lines, etc. can be comprehensively represented in SAP TRM.

The real-time capability of SAP TRM assures communication between SAP and PLC – even at time-critical decision points – with the response time behaviour required for interruption-free material flow.

In case of disturbance of conveyor sections, dynamic diversion strategies are activated to assure maximum possible availability of the conveyor functions.

Automated guided vehicle systems (AGV) are in-house, ground-based conveyor systems using automatically controlled vehicles whose primary task is material transport.

AGVs are either partially or fully controlled and optimised by SAP TRM depending on the manufacturer.

SAP TRM transmits the transport tasks directly to the AGV central controller and processes return messages from these controllers in real time.

SAP TRM picking control

The ”goods-to-man” principle is based on the dynamic provision of article pallets/containers for the operator.

As a rule, automated high bay warehouses or automated small parts warehouses have goods-to-man picking stations, which are SAP TRM controlled.

Goods-to-man is useful when large quantities of different articles have to be put together for deliveries.

SAP TRM picking functions, which offer flexible configuration, support goods-to-man workstations with efficient user dialogues that are easy to use.

SAP TRM picking control

In small parts picking, where high demands are made in terms of efficiency and quality (zero-error strategy), pick-by-light systems with flow racks are used.

Pick-to-light supports, in particular, the allocation of picked goods to a targeted tote or carton.

The entire information flow for the preparation and transmission of picking orders, together with the material flow and organisation of the picking process (picking zones, passing-on of picked goods, target tote allocation, etc.), is controlled with SAP TRM.

Single-phase, multiple-phase and parallel picking processes are comprehensively supported with SAP TRM.

Electric monorail systems (EMS) fulfil important functions in modern logistics centres as conveyor systems that are above the ground and can be positioned precisely. They are used for the low-noise transportation, sorting, storage, buffering and provision of goods.

Like the control concept for automated guided vehicle systems, EMS systems usually have a so called central controller.

Depending on the supplier of the EMS system, SAP TRM provides the EMS central controller or each separate EMS vehicle as well with appropriately optimised transport orders directly.
